Creating your capsule wardrobe in four steps

Many people are beginning to focus more on their capsule wardrobe. This is a set number of clothes you own that can easily mix and match with each other to create a range of different outfits. A lot of the pieces you buy can be worn all year round, so it really helps you save money instead of constantly buying new pieces of clothing.

Without any guidance it can be difficult to know where to start. We’ve put together this four step guide to help you create your very own capsule wardrobe, so you know you always have something stylish to wear.

Step 1: pick your base colour

The best place to start is picking the base colour for your capsule wardrobe. Most people choose either navy or black, you can also use both but if this is your first capsule wardrobe we recommend starting with one. Black is an all-around great colour to use as it goes with anything, so you’ll easily be able to match up other items with your base items. For people who don’t want to have too much black in their wardrobe, navy is another great option as it also goes well with a variety of colours. Occasionally people will choose neutrals, such as a brown, if they really don’t feel like black or navy are their colour.

Step 2: pick your accent colour

Now it’s time to add the colour. Choose some of your favourite colours and add some items in these shades to your collection. Whether it’s pink, olive, blue or red - you can add whatever colours you feel your best in. The only thing to take note of is making sure that your accent colours compliment your base colour. This is why black is often the easiest choice for a base colour, because it goes well with anything.

Step 3: choose your staple pieces

Now you have the colours you want, it’s time to go shopping. You want a good mix of base and accent pieces to create a capsule wardrobe, so that you can mix up your looks. For example, you could get a pair of trousers in your base colour to then wear with shirts in your accent colour, but then also get some trousers in your accent colour to wear with shirts in your base colour. You should also look for some staple jackets and blazers to add to your collection, a base coloured coat is a must.

As a capsule collection is relatively small, you can spend the money investing more into your pieces. Having alterations done on your capsule wardrobe makes all of the outfits look even more flattering, and like you have really spent time planning every detail of your wardrobe. 

Step 4: add some patterns

Once you have items in both your base colour and accent colour, look for some fun patterns that you would like to add to your collection. These are the items that really make a look pop for when you want something a bit different to just colours, and feel like adding something patterned to your outfit. As already highlighted, you just need to make sure that what you choose goes well with your base colour to ensure that all of your items will work well together.
